Why Love Wahiawa…

Why Not?

Hoʻoulu iā Wahiawa- Wahiawa is thrivin, it’s practically a one street wonder.  Really.  Gone is one of the oldest running bars in O’ahu, the 24/7 porn shop, the strip club, and the brothel. The tides are changing in Wahiawa. Kamehameha Road is now lined with the Surfer’s Coffee Bar (the choicest cafe to grab a latte on-the-go go, or take that latte to-the-lounge), Aloha Subs, a mommy and me type boutique, the up and coming Ulu Pono community building for the youth of Wahiawa that now stands where the brothel once stood, and last but certainly not least, where treasure is found in, The Vintage. This pearl called Wahiawa, reminds me of my sweet home town in Kainaliu, Hawai’i which is where my own family has put their roots down and have done business in for over forty years. And if you’re from Hawai’i or ever lived here, than you can appreciate this funky, gem of a town, for it represents a piece of old Hawai’i that is somehow becoming harder to find in the mix of today’s day and age and push for “modernization” (modern-a-why).

Inspired by Wahiawaʻs aloha and charm (and Surfing The Nations) in so many ways, and for so many reasons, I’ve included a series of photos featuring finds from The Vintage, which is quite the hawaiiana/hipster/humanitarian boutique run by non-profit Surfing The Nations, that works to help the community around them in so many practical ways –might I add, fashionably well.  Next time you are cruising up to the North Shore of Oʻahu, be sure to check Wahiawa, because itʻs where the treasures at.

Live Aloha__Give Aloha

Feb2015special-1

February 2015 is here and it’s time to love on the ones you love!  I thought it would be appropriate to keep the aloha going, because after all, love is our universal currency and is an all day, everyday, year round kinda deal.  Sanae Designs and I have come up with our: “Live Aloha- Give Aloha” campaign.  We are going to donate 20% of our sales this month to one of our treasured, local, non profits, Deep and Beyond.  Deep and Beyond (www.deepandbeyond.org) is an exceptional organization that focuses their efforts around those in our community that are disadvantaged.  Every month they run a snorkel day at Kahalu’u beach where people with physical, and other disabilities have an opportunity to snorkel, swim, and experience freedom and love through the ocean, all while building lasting relationships with those around them.  I have volunteered numerous times through out the past few years, and I can’t tell you how good it feels to be able to take someone in the ocean, who normally wouldn’t have the necessary equipment and team of people to support them in order to do so.  Living here in Hawai’i, we take these blessings for granted!  They also run a program where they take youth on overnight camping, and adventure trips around the island.  These camps are for the local youth, but they specifically target those that live in government funded, low income housing, where the chance to go camping, and explore the Big Island is often a luxury that just can’t always be afforded.  We are so grateful for the positive impact, and forward movement that deep and beyond has brought to our island (they’re even doing snorkel days in Hilo now during the summer months!)   As you can see I’m a big fan of theirs and if you have a moment, checkout there website or facebook page.

So in the name of love, and in honor of Deep and Beyond, I am running a special allllll month long. I will be offering a 20/20 Mini Photo Package: 20 minutes of fun, with 20% going towards Deep & Beyond for only $100. Any other type of package or booking for the month of Feb will also include the 20% portion in our ‘Give Aloha’ fund.  I am also doing gift certificates too so why not, buy the one you love a photo session, and some gorgeous, hand crafted jewelry by Sanae designs to go with, all while giving back at the same time?!  Find Sanae Designs by Summerlei on facebook or on etsy at, www.etsy.com/shop/SanaeDesigns.  Summerlei has designed some noteworthy pieces, and will even be offering a trunk show at the Four Seasons Hualālai this month so stay tuned!  And most importantly don’t forget to embrace the essence of Aloha and Live it!

John & Amanda

It was quite appropriate to be lost in the clouds on the Kohala Mountain, of the Big Island of Hawai’i while guests and family witnessed the coming together of John and Amanda Cloud.  The nostalgic Kahua Ranch couldn’t have complimented this western themed wedding any better, as Amanda comes from the Greenwell lineage of paniolo, and John is an All-American cowboy.  Hats off to this bride in boots and her cowboy!

A Takiue Tradition

Takiue-27

December marks the month of the beginning of the end.  ‘Tis The Season’ where the holiday whirlwind seems to blow right in the front door of our busy lives, and blow right out before we even have a pine scented moment to enjoy, inhale, exhale, and ready ourselves for yet another year that is upon us.  It can catch us off guard and knock us over, if we’re not prioritized and prepared to spend Christmas on what’s truly important and meaningful.

For many moons, tradition has played a lead role in passing from father to son for many generations what is worth celebrating and of great significance and importance.  Tradition has passed down for over 2,000+ years the story of the birth of Christ, the origin of Christmas.  Tradition has been a keeper of family, society, and culture.

The Takiue ‘ohana have a tradition so to say, where once a year, they hose the boys down, dress the boys up, pile into a minivan and go holoholo to a fun destination where they can play, and be together.  They call it their yearly family photo session, and they really make a day worth remembering out of it.  They have a hallway where a framed collage is placed next to the one from the year prior, which they’ve kept up with since they’ve been a family.  It makes for a cool little Takiue trip down memory lane on your way to the bathroom, and every year, the family prints are incorporated into gifts for the grandparents and other loved ones.  It’s a holiday custom that would be a great disappointment if they ever skipped out on one year.

What’s a better way to celebrate, honor, and remember what’s worth remembering with the ones you love, that can tangibly be passed down for years to come than a family portrait session?  Because great family traditions should be treasured!

Countdown ’till Gage!

It seems like yesterday that Gage was just a dream and a prayer.  And now as November is here and we are gearing up to celebrate the Kona Coffee Festival, we are also getting ready to celebrate Gage’s entry into the world!

Kyra screams South Kona Girl.  She avoids town unless needed, and is so laid-back and ‘country,’ that it only felt natural to shoot her in her element, and stay ‘south side.’ I ended up shooting her up at my parents coffee farm (if you’re ever on the market for an amazing cuppa joe you can find some at www.paradisefoundhawaii.com).  She and Miss Abi were all gorgeous and almost ready to go, as we just did some last minute shopping in the Closet-of-Mom, (it never gets old) where we whipped out a silk batik to go with her skirt, some Ni’ihau shells, and a red pua from the tree outside. Couldn’t have been more Kyra: No stess + simple and chic.  And that’s what it is all about- capturing her being her. We had so much fun just playing around as it was just another beautiful day at the office!
